HARVESTING TRADITIONS

SINCE 1931

Abundant resources of cod and haddock along the Murman coast and in the White Sea were already being fished for from early times. Most of the fishermen were Pomores. A large part of the catches were salted or dried to stockfish. Pomores travelled each summer to Norway for bartering. Arkhangelsk in a while became a centre for the fish trade within the country. So far the fisheries had been limited to coastal waters and produced relatively small quantities. In 1924 a commercial fishery in the Barents Sea began to operate from Murmansk. Murmansk was always a very important strategic port of waters influenced by Gulf Stream never freeze, which allowed fishing vessels to catch and bring fish to the shore all year around.
